Emerson 19644 and something I learned about an easier way to restore japanne.

Hello my friends and thank you for all the kind comments on the Emerson 14644 post. I started to clean up the 19644 that I bought from Dennis LeBow and wasn't looking forward to repeating all the work that I did on the 14644. I thought that there must be a better way to bring the japanne back without unduly harming the finish. I had some heavy duty compound from the days that I used to buff out cars. But first, below is the 19644 as I got it from Dennis.

Here are the chemicals that I used starting with the heavy duty compound and proceeding to the light compound, then the cleaner wax and finally the Meguiars.

I'm happy to report that the use of the heavy duty compound did not harm the japanne. Quite the contrary, it cut the work down by 75%. What took me four or five hours on Saturday with the 14644,  I accomplished in one hour today on the 19644. Below are some pictures (before and after).

And after (below)

I was amazed how quickly the heavy duty compound took years of crud off the japanne without harming it. The lighter duty cleaner compound brought out the sheen and the cleaner wax and Meguiars really brought out the deep luster of the japanne. Judge for yourselves.

I delivered the brass for both fans to Ron Bethoney at New England Brass Refinishing so it'll be a week or two before I get it back, polished and lacquered. In the meantime, I'll be needing a wing bolt and oil spout for the 19644. I haven't gotten any replies to my need for those so I'll shoot an email to Chad Baker. The wing bolt will be the harder one of the two to source.

Couldn't wait to put the 19644 back together. It's on the right and the 14644 is on the left. Notice how much deeper black the 19644 is from using the heavy compound!

Great cleanup and great write up! I've found that the Emerson Japan is very resilient to heavy cut compound. I love how the finish turns out with going through each step.

Very nice, David. I throw mine with the bullet proof enamel like those Emersons in my parts cleaner for a day, or possibly two, and off comes the crud after the soak and a scrub brush. BUT....I would have to remove a nice motor tag with decent enamel before the soak or the parts cleaner would take the tag enamel clean off.  The stator, rotor, grommets, and switch must all come out with my approach as well.

The motor tags were so good that I didn’t want or need to remove them and I don’t have the replacement little tacks that bend over inside the case to hold the tags in place (where to get them?)

Thanks Bobby and Mel. You are very kind! I just heard from Darrell Koller who has some of the base covers that I need.

You did great, David. I have gone down your path presented on this post with tag salvage myself. At times I am poor at the way a present my message. In a nutshell, I wasn't trying to enforce it is my way or the highway. : > )

McMaster has those brass finishing nails dirt cheap. They go in like downtown in the event you want to go the full restoration distance. They come in packs of 200. The order no. is below.

I have an account with Mcmaster Carr. I'll order some right now!

A while back the 200-count purchase came in handy.  I was putting a tag back on an Emerson big motor housing that was powder coated. Instead of using my brain and drill out the rivet holes a tad wider, I kept trying to tap in those brass finishing nails through the powder coated tag rivet holes bending one after another. After bending about 15 nails and pulling them out, a bulb went off in my dense head. Fact Jack.

I know what you mean Russ. I've done the same thing!

There was actually, believe it or not, logic in my thinking. On each attempt, the nail would go a smidge down further into the hole. I figured once I get the nail to seat, that tag will be snug as a bug. The problem came when I looked at the small pile of bent nails I made on the table. Then reality sunk in, I got a brainstorm and drilled the powder coat out the holes.

So,...

you filed the nails down
to a smaller diameter?
