Mark Wallin
Well I did start a thread here on this fan and forgot that I needed to use my actual name so my account was bumped....moving on lol. Date on the tag is 10-16-14, blade stamped 16, so its probably a 1916. I didnt want to collect any more fans cause well I have the few I need an an extra and well you know how it goes. I didnt have a brass one, and this kinda just popped up. Its in pretty good shape. Looks to be the original finish, and its so good im not gonna strip it. It will stay as is. A few of the grill bits have come apart, and some look to have been repaired. The whole grill is painted gold, but I assume its brass underneath? If it is Ill probably strip the paint and repair the few sections by soldering. The blade I wanted to polish, but with the patina of the rest of the unit, not gonna do that. But I also am not a fan of the tarnishing. I may use some scotchbrite to clean the bade, keep a matt finish on it and re lacquer it. Any suggestions are welcome So the questions, wiring. This has 4 wires coming out of the motor in the original head cord. 4?? There were 2 terminals in the ceramic switch where these were attached, 2 wires on each paired together. Does this seem right? The ceramic looks like its been broken/cracked and repaired. Someone had put a cord on it at some point. Thats obviously getting changed along with the head wires. I know some people dont mess with em but I dont want to ever worry about them and Ive had good luck in the past replacing em on every other fan ive done. I just wanna be sure its wired correctly. And finally the motor itself, 2 issues. 1, it wont come apart. I dont want to pry ot gouge anything. i wrapped it in painters tape and have been smacking it with a deadblow hammer to try and knock it loose. (a dead blow is like a rubber mallet with beads in it and a little bit of weight, it wont damage anything unless i really get crazy) The halves wont budge Any suggestions?? And second issue, where it pivots on the base is well, effed up lol. I dont know what happened here. I dont know if a sleeve has broken off the casting? If it was cocked funny for a long time and just wore out? Gonna have to repair it somehow. The bearing isnt frozen, infact everything on this fan is just old, but in really good shape mechanically. Anyone have a pic of what it should look like or thoughts on repair? Now for the pics.
Mark Wallin
Well I got the cap off the motor...that was way more stuck than I expected. I can probably change the head wire without removing the stator, but properly heat shrinking the wires, and cleaning the start contacts...I'm probably going to remove the stator. I love read what a pain it is, but I wanna do it right and do it once. Head wire had 4 wires because 2 of em were soldered together, I dunno if that's original but it will get a twisted pair for the head wire now. Switch is well, the porcelain has been broken. And repaired poorly. I'm not sure if I wanna try and get the old epoxy apart or leave it as is. Speed coil ohms out ok, and the stator does as well. I think I found a few good diagrams to be sure it was wired properly.
Mark Wallin
Wow no replys yet? Haha people must be slowly trickling over running out the other forum till it's shut down...and the holidays...seems too after reading other threads on these while there is some like of em, not a lot of love for fixing em. I decided. Or to remove the stator, resoldered the starting contacts and remove them to clean em. One spring on the armature start fingers was super loose, so I modified the spring to put some tension back into it. Matches the other 2 fingers now for tension and they all move freely. I can slide heat shrink in over the stator wires and solder a new head cord on pretty easily. Anyone have pics of what the base support is supposed to look like? Mine the sleeve that sits on the bearing is definitely non existent.
Lawrence Smith
I think your mounting stem is all there-- very common issue with the stamped steel westy of that era, you can pull the machined stem out of the base, careful use of JB weld will repair that issue. I'll see if I can find pics of a repair I did some time ago on a similar fan. I learned this trick from an old Westy repair guy TJ. Mark Wallin
Oh snap, that's supposed to be part of the gearcase? Hah that makes more sense. That's gonna be a bit easier to repair. Sweet
