Kim Frank
As the year winds down, we just finished up another one of Tom Frampton's brainchilds...actually three. This past Spring, Tom commissioned a local artist to sculpt an angel in clay, using the dimensions of a Marelli motor as scale. Once the figure was sculpted and fired, it was reinforced to stand up to the molding process. Tom delivered the angel to a small foundry and had three figures cast in bronze. Once back in the shop, I started attaching the motors to the figures. When that was done, I fabricated cages and struts for each motor. Two brass grommets were made for each fan. The blades were in rough shape, so they were disassembled, the wings were sliprolled to get the bends and creases out. Once reassembled, the blades were were checked for clock and plane, then balanced. All steel hardware was cold blued and all the brass was aged. All three motors were direct current, with two of them rated at 110v and the third at 220v. Tom had a certain finish in mind, so the figures were shot in automotive primer, sanded, given an undercoat of brown enamel, then a final coat of oil rubbed bronze enamel was sprayed. The bases are walnut and finished in lacquer. Once everything was assembled, the fans were tested and ran fine. Each weigh in at 25 lbs. They are now on display in the museum. It will be interesting to see what the new year will have in store for the shop.....Merry Christmas to everyone from the Antique Fan Collectors Museum @ Fanimation.
