Stan Adams
Well the old GE attic fan started really sounding off last night. Been grinding for a while & I kept putting it off as it is a bear to get to. Finally had to bite the bullet, managed to get the assembly out the bottom. Now if I can just break this blade loose.
Ken McClead
Try spraying the set screw holes after the screws have been removed with penatrating spray. Also, remove the sheave and bearings using a puller. I have found out that using sand paper To remove rust and grime from the shaft will help the bearings come off easily. It looks like the fan shaft is 3/4 " diameter. Look at Amazon for pgn bearings. They are a lot cheaper than buying them from a bearing supplier or Grainger. Good luck.
Stan Adams
Been trying that Ken, but so far have only gotten a small amount of twisting after heating it. Due to the design of the GE hub, a puller is out of the question as its too thin. Usually heat, then penetrating spray, then twist will do the job, but this one is really frozen. Just removing the sheave & replacing the bearings is no go due to the weight. It weighs 50 pounds & no way I can lift that in there & get the screws started holding that much up. Going to try more heat tonight.
