CENTER OF BLADE HUB REPAIR

Roger Borg

Recommended Posts

I picked up an AB 8" ge some time ago, and digging into it finally.

The blade has a sad repair on it, seems someone tried to solder it, since the round part that passes through the hub and attaches to the rotor is not secure, and spins inside of the the hub. Meaning the cylinder is not secure to the hub.

Do I use soldering wick to get the gunky solder off?

Then to the heart of the issue, how should these two parts be properly joined?

Thanks...

Heat the gunky solder until it's molten...

Quick, point-blank blasts* of compressed air...

will remove nearly all the solder.

What remains is the solder that has "wetted" into the surface.

This solder-to-base-metal wetting is an intermetallic bond and is very very thin.

A Scotch-Brite pad will cut through it readily.

Easy enough, thanks.

And part 2 of the question, any idea best way to properly rejoin and repair??

If lacking compressed
air, a small wire brush
would suffice.

Just be careful when using the air gun. That molten solder flies everywhere. Use a face shield. That is the best method.
