Synnove Vikstrom Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 I'm not sure what they used at the factory, but wondering what sealant people use when refurbishing the Emerson gearboxes? I was thinking of using a really thin gasket where the box attaches to the motor housing and then some anaerobic flange sealant to join the two gearbox halves together. I went ahead and roughly lapped the gearbox faces to give help whatever sealant I use have a better chance of working. Turned out pretty good! Quote
Russ Huber Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 (edited) Anyone have Emerson gearbox chatter that intensifies on the oscillation sweep? Take out the brass gear and replace with a phenolic gear and it will sweeten things up. 🙂 Edited August 3, 2024 by Russ Huber 2 Quote
Paul Carmody Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 I just used a non hardening gasket sealer ,the old black stuff. Most fans I don’t use anything ,but these came from the factory that way. There must be a reason. 1 Quote

Yeah RTV would definitely work. I hate using it though... such a pain to clean up if you ever plan on opening the part up again. 9 minutes ago, Chris Campbell said: Where did you find this gear? Dave Hoatson Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 Emerson gearboxes don’t need sealant. The grease is too thick to leak out. 2 Quote

The ones I have looked like they had sealant applied at the factory where the castings mate so I assumed it would be needed upon reassembly Quote
Paul Carmody Posted August 4, 2024 Posted August 4, 2024 (edited) I have not noticed sealant on older Emerson’s.As to the necessity I can’t say,but this later one came with sealant. You can clearly see where the gear box was sealed then painted as the factory paint is over black sealant. It was also on the gearbox to motor surface. There was no indication that this fan had ever been apart. Mark Olson Posted August 4, 2024 Posted August 4, 2024 I have found remnants of sealer on the gearboxes, too. The stuff looks, acts and feels, for all the world, like Permatex #1 to me. Quote
James Gaspard Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 Are these Emerson gearboxes from a 29646 fan? I haven't opened mine yet but wanting to be pre informed? What type grease is used in the 29646 box? Quote
Doug Wendel Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 I've never used sealant on a fan gearbox and never had any leakage worth mentioning that I've noticed. 1 Quote
Anthony Lindsey Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 Ditto, never had one leak and never used sealant. Lucas Red & Tacky is what I use. 1 Quote

Patrick Ray Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 If a high quality grease is used, it won't "melt" and leak out of the gear box. 1 Quote
