Trevor Soundararajan
Hello Friends, I was encouraged to post about this after a “preview” of this at Fan Fair. I inherited the blade from work, which was a spare normally used in tubeaxial or exhaust fans. I wanted to do something special with it, instead of making it to some random 1725 split phase plug-n-play screamer. I sourced the motor from Air King. It’s a 1/6 HP, ball bearing motor with 3 speeds, normally used on their 20” HV and window fans. Despite the loading between fan blades being close, the aluminum blade didn’t have enough drag to get usable speeds out of, so I stepped down the torque for Medium and Low. Luckily, this motor responds very well to capacitors! Medium is dead center of the range and low is near windmilling with a gentle whole-room draft. High speed whips, substantially over medium and brought many smiles among the group I demonstrated it for. I wanted to give it an aviation theme, so the struts are small airfoils that hold the cowling. The rear cone houses the wiring with a 3 speed rotary knob at the rear. The paint is in a triumphant metallic blue powdercoat. I’ve used this fan reliably for the past 8 months without a skip in performance. I’m really happy with how this came out! Thank you sincerely for those who supported me on Facebook and Fan Fair. Hope to make version 2 in the near future. -Mr. T
