When I need brushes I go on the net and enter the size brushes I need and hundreds of Chinese repops show up and work very well and are cheap... Even if a little large for you exact needs you can sand them to the size you need cheap... Did I mention cheap?

Thanks George. Finding out an 3/8” square by .83” long is not an easy one to find

Your probably right but they look the same as a Northwind that are 1/4 by 1/4.Did you use a micrometer.Im not trying to step on your toes but if they are the same as a Northwind I know the ones that work.

Just a thought. You can do like George said and sand them a bit. What is the diameter where it attaches to the spring out of curiosity?

If they are too long, or a tad to snug in the brush holder channel, you simply sand them down to correct length/size on some wet dry.

If you have an Ace Hardware near you, they should have a couple of drawers of generic carbon brushes of various sizes. I've found most of what I've needed in there. I've had to sand them occasionally, but if I ever need brushes in short order and don't want to wait on shipping, that's my go-to place.

I see what you are saying! I looked around and couldn’t find anything close.Even a 10mm x10mm to sand down.I checked my junk ,nothing close.I know nothing of this place but while searching they have a .375 x  .375.Your length was probably longer to begin with.It has a spring and wire that can be removed. They are easy to shape.I had to file down ,then extend the spring attachment on the left ones.

Ace does have an assortment as James said.

If you're going to play with a lot of brush motor fans you can still find vintage supply boxes of various brushes on eBay. I own several myself and they come in handy.

I always order too long and cut to the length I need easy peasy... Dont over think this...  I have several boxes of brushes I ordered from China and have nearly used them up. THEY have round, square and rectangular... Usually in a box of twelve sets and these sell for the same price as one set from Ace and generally free shipping... I wrap a piece of fine grit sandpaper around a dowel and pre-curve to match the rotor and this will cause less sparking kind of pre breaking in if you will... I say it again, dont overthink it... Spring tension is as important as the carbon brush... Take that to the bank!!

WoW George! Your entire fan collection must be mostly direct current and universal motor fans. Except for the juniors of course. 🙂

Haha! Mostly 450 emmys! I still have a couple hundred left! And twice that many 8-9-10 jrs..

I just hate to see guys getting all twisted up over carbon brushes and springs... I have noticed the Chinese brushes seem to be a little harder? Maybe?? But I have 3-450's I run nearly dailey for years and have not noticed any unusual or excessive wear on rotors... Have you tried these Chinese brushes or any experience with them? I am a bit tighter on some things I don't consider a big deal... I did learn to pre convex the brushes really helps reduce the sparking between the rotor and brush.   I am NOT an expert on this stuff..

10-4 George I appreciate the advice and will use it well.

I looked a couple of hrs on every site I could come up with ,and can’t find anything close.Once you get to 3/8 +:there is no square ,it can be wide enough but not thick enough.Even metric finding a 10mm square ,which is close is not to be found.Maybe an extra large but it would have to be completely carved. If someone has a link for a suitable replacement I wish you would share.

I found only one 10 mm square  which is just a little wide ,but it too has a wire and no spring attachment point.I ordered four just to play with. When they get here Wednesday Scott I will examine them to see if it is practical. If it’s a success I will give them to you.

If not  the suggestion of Darryl Hudson is a good one.

Just jerking your chain.  I found mine at a flea market.  I have bought from ACE and McMaster as well. It is not like I am going through carbon brushes like hot cakes. 🙂

I hope this helps..  These are 6x6mm brushes that work nicely on emmy 450's and maybe others... If you can find 7x7mm those would be the perfect size and only need minor adjustments... I got these 5 or 6 years ago for $7/box... The box contains 9 pair of brushes... The wire that runs through the spring I cut off and voila! You have a cheap new set of brushes for your fan.  I still have several boxes for restores for the 450's or any brushed motor... sometimes ya gotta go through pages of brushes to get what you need or close.  As I said, cheap, cheap cheap!
