Jason Barrett
I was wondering if anybody knew what type of rubber feet the Westinghouse Pancake fans used? And any advice on running it or specific things to look for? Thanks for y’all’s help.
Michael Bouthiller
Is the cord original
Jason Barrett
No I don’t believe they are original. I see what I believe is rubber underneath the fabric. I think they are older replacements that have deteriorated over the years. One of the head wires is broken and the fan only runs on 1 speed. Michael Bouthiller
So that cord is the predecessor of the cords we use today
Michael Bouthiller
Someone definitely repainted it in the past
David Kilnapp
Below are the rubber feet that you need. Darryl Hudson has them. Contact him at: Darryl@Hudsonscustommachining.com Your headwire appears to be original. I know that because there were small pieces of the headwire remaining on my pancake when I got it which Tony Clayton was able to reproduce for me and it is nearly identical to yours. See below. Your power cord may indeed also be original except it is missing the outer covering. Contact Tony Clayton. I'm sure he still has the specifications to my pancake wire that he made for me. You can contact Tony at: oldschoolwire@gmail.com or call him at 757-350-9460. Tony is a super nice guy and his wire is hands down the BEST! You may consider putting the lettering on the base (as would have been there originally) which you can see in the picture above. You may notice that this fan (two speeds) has a very unusual bearing (with a channel cut into it for an oil wick). Your fan is exceptionally rare. I've heard values anywhere from $3,500 to $5,000. Jason Barrett
Thank you, all help is appreciated. I’m assuming that I only have 1 speed because one of the three wires going from the base to the motor is broken. It’s broken at the point were the head wire enters the motor. The current wires on my fan seem to have a thin rubber/plastic material lining under the fabric. So I just assumed this is replacement wire from years ago that has just deteriorated. Where/whom would I get the lettering for the switch? Edited August 24 by Jason Barrett
Michael Rathberger
Bill explained the two speeds to me at Jim's this year. I think I have this right. The wiring in the motor runs two fields on low and four on high. He said the way Westinghouse did it is they used the two coils at the top, 10 and 2 I think, for low which puts a strain on the bearing when running as it pulls the rotor up. He redoes it so low is 10 and 4 or opposite to balance it out. Fascinating stuff. Edited August 24 by Michael Rathberger
David Kilnapp
I finally remembered where I got the decals for the OFF FULL and HALF: There is a local guy that I know who does fancy lettering on cars by the name of Peter Blackman (BLACKMAN DESIGNS). I'm going to see him in the next couple of weeks for some work on my 8 inch MESCO. I'll ask him if he would make me a set of the Westinghouse Pancake decals for you. Vic Valencheck
I'm also in the process of restoring a Westinghouse pancake. Does anyone have a diagram of the wiring of the 4 pole stator? I had rewrapped all four coils. I keep thinking it is wired like a GE pancake but that is wrong because of it having 3 wires.
David Kilnapp
Vic: Take a look at this post: https://new.afcaforum.com/index.php?/topic/53406-wtb-westinghouse-pancake-switch/#comment-457998 There's a wiring diagram there which may be of some help to you. Vic Valencheck
Thanks David, that helps out a lot! I'm curious about the 30 ohm resistor in the diagram. Was it installed as an after thought or was it originally installed. My fan didn't have one.
David Kilnapp
I'm guessing that it was an afterthought. My Westy pancake doesn't have one.
Michael Rathberger
Were resistors a thing in 1904? I don't see how that diagram works. Send a note to Bill Fanum. He repaired one at Jim's meet in April.

Russ Huber
Both the 03 Introduction direct and alternating current 12" and 16" Westinghouse desk fans ran on two speeds of 1000 RPM low and 1550 RPM high speed. the DC 12" model ran cheaper on 27 watts low speed and 44 watts on high. The 60 cycle AC model 12" model was 60 watts low speed and 85 watts on high.
Michael Bouthiller
Did the pancake come in 16 of was it 12 inch only Russ?

Russ Huber
If they used resistance back in 03, they would have done it using something like German silver wire winding. The question is......why use resistance when you're disengaging/reducing the number of field poles for the lower speed? Russ Huber
Common sense to me is if I were going to cut out part of the 4-pole field to slow the fan down, wouldn't you just energize two opposing poles in the field?

David Kilnapp
You won't owe me anything, Jason (my treat). I expect to have the base back on my 8" MESCO battery fan on Thursday at which point I will call Peter Blackman and see if he can fit me into his schedule. I'll bring a picture of the decals that his assistant (who no longer works for him) made for me and ask him if he would make those decals once again. He has a machine that stamps them out as I recall. I'll let you know when/if I can get them. Edited August 26 by David Kilnapp
Russ Huber
1498394607724515518-00695938 (storage.googleapis.com) The object of my invention is to provide a motor of simple and inexpensive construction which may be adjusted for either of two rates of speed by a single movement of a simple controlling-switch.
