Roger Borg Posted June 30, 2023 Posted June 30, 2023 While another project is stalled, I'm cleaning up an emerson duct fan, similar to this one. I was surprised to find emerson's version of a shaft wick, as I'm accustomed to their reservoir system. That said, thoughts on what to replace with, or other guidance on keeping the original mesh? This is from the front of the motor, but I imagine there is also something similar in the back, since there is a second oil port there. Thanks, and happy early 4th... Quote
Russ Huber Posted June 30, 2023 Posted June 30, 2023 You can try cleaning out the old felt. Just remove it and if it stays intact soak it in some rubbing alcohol (70-90%) in your medicine cabinet. If you have some rubber gloves after it soaks squeeze it with your fingertips to work out as much of the old, tarnished lubricant as possible. Let it sit out to dry, the alcohol evaporates fast. Or get some new felt to pack in. Quote

Russ Huber Posted June 30, 2023 Posted June 30, 2023 Check out some local businesses such as ACE for Non-adhesive felt pads, or sheets of felt. You can always cut to size, or double up. Nothing that works for you there, surf the web for non-adhesive felt, something like Amazon. Somebody here may have already been there done that with a source. Go get em, Roger. 🙂 Quote
Russ Huber Posted June 30, 2023 Posted June 30, 2023 (edited) FWIW, you could "carefully" razor blade off the adhesive side of a thick felt pad of close to correct diameter. Check out "felt washers" on the web, hit images after you enter. Edited June 30, 2023 by Russ Huber Quote
Roger Borg Posted June 30, 2023 Author Posted June 30, 2023 Have plenty of felt around from fan bases. That stuff is fine? Didnt know if it was some special consistency like the firm F1 wicks from regular oil cups. 9 minutes ago, Russ Huber said: FWIW, you could "carefully" razor blade off the adhesive side of a thick felt pad of close to correct diameter. Russ Huber Posted June 30, 2023 Posted June 30, 2023 You want felt that soaks up and holds oil like the felt in oil cup wicking. McMaster-Carr Quote

McMaster-Carr Wonder if this stuff that they use as packaging will work?? Seems very similar to the wool fabric for some types of moving blankets... Quote
Russ Huber Posted June 30, 2023 Posted June 30, 2023 Looks like a winner to me Roger. Just pack it in there snug to the bearing and soak it up with fresh 20 weight. You want your bearing/rotor shaft surfaces slick with oil and happy campers. 🙂 Quote
Chris Jacobsen Posted June 30, 2023 Posted June 30, 2023 Also can try soaking crusty oily stuff in a bottle of fresh gasoline. Sometimes I soak, massage/gently hammer tough chunks and soak several times but it usually works pretty well for me. The original stuff was either oil based or mixed with oil, gas being more reactive tends to work into old grease/gunk pretty readily. Just mind your sparks and work outside! You may even get away with soaking the wick while on the motor, mind that gas sometimes will etch a finish so try to only contact the wick. Quote
