Rick Hill Posted January 20 Posted January 20 (edited) I am in the process of (slowly) restoring two Westinghouse Deluxe ceiling fans. One is an original counter mount and the other will be a column mount. They were in pieces when purchased. My challenge is figuring out how the lower bearing housing attaches to the switch housing. A decorative piece is supposed to be mounted between the two pieces previously mentioned. However, both the lower bearing housing and the switch housing have holes with female threads. It would be impossible to connect these two pieces together, especially since the threaded holes do not go all the way through either the bearing housing or the switch housing. I realize I have probably completely failed to describe the problem in an understandable way. Hopefully the photos will do a better job. Edited January 21 by Rick Hill Spelling Quote
Evan Atkinson Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Wish I could help Rick! Column mounted fans are a bridge too far for me. I have none in the collection here. I’ve never found any publicly for sale. What a neat fan to restore: if I can help in any way I’m able to, let me know Quote
Geoff Dunaway Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Would you show us the solution to the puzzle once you get it solved ?? Many thanks. Great projects. Opening up a Sports Bar in retirement to show those beauties off ?? Rocklin Fan Bar ?? Quote
Rick Hill Posted January 26 Author Posted January 26 Sure, Geoff. I described having two fans that are being worked on. One is an original counter mount. The other started life as a ceiling hung fan, but I have the parts to make a column fan. One of the bearing housing pieces had what appeared to be enlarged holes. I assumed these holes were drilled to address the same problem as I was dealing with. It seemed to be a pretty hack fix, as the holes were considerably larger than what would work for the 10/32 machines screws. There were also some sort of fabricated spacers that looked to be an attempt to compensate for the overly large holes. I assumed both bearing housings were intended to be identical, but the second piece did not have holes all the way through as would be needed for the column mount. As I pondered this I began to think that maybe the hack-fix holes were original. Maybe someone enlarged them along the way and then realized they now need a spacer. Nevertheless, I am now convinced that the column mount switch housings have mounting holes that penetrate all the way through the part and the ceiling hung switch housings do not. So I drilled out the other switch housing. This was always an option, but I didn't want to alter an original part. But I think I'm good with modifications that make the ceiling hung piece into a column mount piece. At least that's what I choose to believe. In summary: Operator error. 1 Quote
