Do these screws hold the stator?

The windings prevent them from being backed out.

It has been a few years since I restored mine but if I recall correctly yes, that stator was held in by those 4 screws. I believe because the field windings protruded so much over the screws on mine I ended up removing the retaining pins and pulling each coil off the laminate core as I did not want to risk damaging them by bending out of the way.

FWIW....another method that may help is to heat the winding with a hairdryer to make the older stiff winding more pliable for a little more give.
