Stan, do I need to fill out a registration form or anything? Pay a fee?

I would like to reserve a table and bring some fans to ask questions and get tips about.

Should I bring an extension cord, or power strip?

What hotel/motel will it be held at? Do we have a group rate?

Will you have tee shirts for the event? If so, do I need to order one?

It is a lot of questions, but this is my first AFCA event, and I am excited about it.

Thanks

Hey Gerry, fantastic to hear you are coming! Regional meets are much more informal than Fan Fair. Regionals are generally held at members houses & are free. There are several hotels up in Atascocita on the north area of the lake, most usually stay at the Best Western Atascocita, but lots of construction up there right now.

We will have lots of tables & should have plenty of cords. My garage is 30x30 but we also set up a canopy in front with tables. The only charge is for meals, we have a caterer doing hamburgers & hot dogs on Saturday for lunch. If enough are there Friday evening, we will probably order pizza. Friday lunch is on your own.

Unfortunately I don't have anyone who does T-shirts, but that is an option for a later date. are on 7 acres on the Southwest side of the lake three miles outside the beltway. Look forward to meeting you!

Thank you, Stan. I didn't realize it was at your house. That is very nice of you. Please send your address and phone number when you are ready, and I will let GPS do its thing.

I intend to bring a few fans that I have questions about.

I am looking forward to meeting you, and other fan club members. I like the informal setting.

I will be driving, so let me know if there is anything I can bring.

Still working on the R &M 2504. I started buying fans on eBay and have about 30 now. Nothing real special, but fans that were interesting to me at the time. They are a wide variety, so I can learn pros and cons as I repair them. I bought several 16", because they were less expensive. As well as a few 9 and 10". I am understanding now why 12" fans are the most popular. 16" fans take up a lot of space, and the small fans don't seem to be as well built. I am wondering if other collectors tend to specialize on brands and/or models, or if they have broad collections. I look forward to seeing your collection.

I am also interested in learning how other collectors find good deals and unusual fans. I went to a lot of estate sales for about a year, and still scan the online auctions, but I seldom see a good fan. I don't do antique shops anymore, and those fans seem to be restored and expensive. I ran an advertisement in the neighborhood social media, but I only had one or two responses. Now I am starting to wonder how to sell the fans I don't care to keep, after I repair them. I won't have room for all of them. I am out of space already.

So many questions. So much to learn.

Thanks, Gerry

I plan on being there Saturday from the Woodlands area. Never been to a fan meet/fair. Am looking forward to it. I’ll bring some fans and a couple of Variacs.

Mark, this is off subject but I wanted to ask you about using a Variac. I have a couple of Variac's that I use when starting up old audio gear. I am curious as to the benefit of using a Variac on old fans. Would you give me your thoughts?

Hi Gerry,

I know these old fans were designed to run on lower ac voltages than we use now. A lot of them run on 100-110v. My house voltage averages about 126v. That would make an old fan run, fast and hot, doing damage to the stator windings, maybe the speed coil windings also. I run most of my old fans around 100, sometimes lower.

Thanks Mark, I understand that. I am not even sure of the voltage at my house. I will check it.

I was thinking the purpose of using a Variac would be some advantage in startup of old fans that have not been run in years. I guess it could be another benefit.

Thanks and I hope to meet you at Stan's house next month.

I'm thinking about attending also, as it's only about 60 miles away. I will be looking for a variac if anyone is willing to sell one there and possibly a good used balanced blade assembly for a R&M 1604a. I've never been to anything like this before, but am kind of excited now!

Also, if anyone has a "spare" switch for this unit, bring it with you, I'll buy it! The switch that's on it now seems to work fine, but I had to do major surgery upon it and don't trust it much at all...

Stan, sounds like you are getting a good response to your invitation. Let me know if it would help if I brought some tables and chairs or a canopy. I think it is 10 by 17, but I can check on it.

Hey Sophie, some will get there earlier,  but most trickle in through the day. For a lot of the out town folks, it is lunchtime on. I’m on the lake, so you don’t have to deal with just fans.😀
