Hi,

Any general advice or techniques used on bending cage wires back to there original shape?

Fan is a G.E. 49X929.  Have a few others that need this love as well.

Tools, process or steps to take to get the best results?

Want try and avoid breaking any of the cross wire connections.

Has a few other problems with missing parts to replace.

Thanks for any help.

Brass cages are a walk in the park compared to steel, which is what you’ve got. Just harder to bend by hand and, as you said, risks popping adjacent welds. Here’s a post from Russ Huber off AFCA’s old forum that helped me with this very question some years ago. Great tip is to use a hook, threaded into a hoist above head or wherever (I say above head because that’s what I’ve done and it gives me reasonable control). Then slowly bend the offending section back out, use a hard surface to bend other protrusions in. A lot of slow work should help avoid a weld popping but it can still happen. My only change to Russ’s suggestion is I used a hook that has a rubber coating to try not to mar up the cage paint. Not sure if anyone has solutions to minimize the risk to welds further. Anyway, here’s Russ’s post:

If you have a garage, basement, or utility shed, the use of a heavy threaded hook within reach at eye level, or above your skull can be very advantageous for ROUNDING, making uniform, and straightening bent guards. You simply manipulate the guard in the hook using your eyes, mitts, and body weight.

If you don't have a spot welder for steel guard weld separations, A talented welder with a wire feed can do pleasing to the eye repairs to your guard for peanuts. You simply use a dremel with grinding bit to clean up the weld ,if necessary.

Thanks Dave,

Great idea,  I'll give that a try.  I have one of thiose vinyl coated hooks i was suppose to use to hang something on at one time.

Sounds like a good way to control the pressure you can apply to the bend.
