Passing Jan Hendriks

I have been keeping Jan company throughout his health issues and converse with him almost on a daily basis on the computer.  Sadly, he has passed.  I had sent him a gift package, sadly, that is no longer going to make it to him.  Jan was a good friend and a selfless person.  Jan, I miss you but know you are in a much better place now.

I woke to this news today, but from our last conversation I knew it was imminent. Jan was truly selfless with his knowledge and help. I wish the Deep Peace of the Flowing Waters to all his beloved.

I have been thinking lately that someone should write a brief history (memorial now) for him for the next Magazine. I didn't know him well enough to do so, but maybe those who did might wish to discuss this in a separate thread. It would be nice for his contribution to be fixed in printed matter.

Paul. I didn't know him well either. I met him at a FF he attended. I believe it was Louisville. Nice man. Anyway, I think you have a wonderful idea. Hope to hear more about Jan from someone who knew him well.

Maybe a collaboration would be appropriate. Pete, Dan, Lane, Kim, others come to mind... I have an idea... I will reach out in new post later...

From this forum, PMs and
his great youtube videos,
I sensed he was a delight,
a giving man who persued
and also shared his great
passions.

He will be greatly missed.

Peaceful eternal rest
                            to you, Jan.

Rest in peace my Kiwi mate.

My condolences to his family, mates and all that knew him. What a great man with talent and skills second to none. August has not been kind to my family and friends.

I will dearly miss our daily conversations mate.

Attached are a few photos of Jans most loved things in life.

There is but a few fan motor artisans here that can skillfully independently work around any obstacle during the restoration process. I am not one of them, Jan was. I was not close with him, but I had a hell of lot of respect for him.

Not having spoken to him, but seeing his artistry, we have lost a valued member. Seeing how he has befriended many members, and touched many lives, may be rest in peace and may all of his family and friends find joy in the way he has positively impacted their lives.

Jan and I had a few conversations and I agree he was a very generous, kind person.  I’m happy and honored to have bought a few of his cherished Marellis.  Over the past few months I had a feeling he wasn’t doing well.  I know that a recent doctor visit didn’t bring him the hope he was counting on.

Prayers go out to his family. Unfortunately I didn’t know him very well other than conversations about fans. Hopefully someone who knew him better would do him justice with an obit in the magazine.

I’m happy that recently he was able to obtain some of his bucket list fans. It seemed to give him a lot of joy despite feeling miserable.
Rest in peace Jan!

Lane - thank you for your kind words and comments. Not to hijack this post, but as I said above, I will start a separate post. I suppose I can coordinate this, as I envision an obituary along with comments from collectors who would like to add their thoughts, stories, etc... (I guess I'm volunteering to write this now...) I will try to get basic biographical info, or even perhaps an obituary, from Jan's son via another collector/friend of Jan's, but think out of respect I'll give the family time to mourn before I ask abut this. I suppose I should announce this in 'Generel' section . . .

Jan is indeed a very talented and selfless person.  He enjoyed working on fans and daydreaming.  We would talk about making new parts to restore old fans and toy motors.  He always did however have other things he enjoyed most, his grand kids visiting him.  Though he did complain how much they took up his time with working on fans....that is the type of person Jan was, always thinking about fans.  Last night, I was bummed out and came home late.  I discovered two pick up slips from Australia stuck to my front house door.  Something to remind me of his great talents.  He was working on this in between restoring GE Pancakes.  He died doing what he loved most.  Meeting his grand kids and working on fans.

Hi AFCA members.  I have yet to register on your site but I thought I should post anyway, as I had the pleasure of corresponding with Jan Hendriks over the last three years.  I'm in the Netherlands, and when my interest in antique fans began a few years ago I was drawn to Marellis, which led me to contact Jan for parts for my humble beginning fans.  He was always helpful, even to the newbie that I was.  We talked about his passion for music, particularly Robert Fripp, Eno and Lou Reed, orchids, fans and life in general via email;  not every day, but at least once or twice a week.  It was always a pleasure to see his name pop up in the inbox.  I now have dozens of pictures of his fans he shared with me, and a small collection of fine Marellis.  I found a way to repay some of his generosity;  he had an interest in EMI fans from Utrecht, Netherlands, and I sourced half a dozen for him here locally, as well as other fans including a Peter Behrens model.  Although we worked in different materials, I think we shared a passion for the objects we work on, and a desire to restore them impeccably.  He was a rare soul I will miss him very, very much.  Michael Yeats

A Restelli in the last photo ... How cool is that ...

In addition to a good persona, Jan had some wonderful fans.

I met Jan via FB messenger last Fall. I knew of him over the years as a Marelli Fanman and marveled at his restorations. I found out thru some of his posts that he was battling throat cancer. He had gotten into GE pancakes and they bit him hard. He reached out and we found that we had a lot in common besides fans. He told me he was a boiler maker so of course I sent him a Purdue shirt, along with the museum Tees. We conversed thru Messenger regularly and had a couple of hours at the beginning and end of each day. There is a 14 hour difference in time zones. I'd hear my phone ding at one or two in the morning and just knew Jan was in his shop and showing some of the work he was about. I'd reply when I got up and he'd be done for the day as it was getting close to late evening in Ingham. His last message to me was when I hadn't heard from him for a couple of days and I asked if he was okay....he messaged 'No, very crooked...BAD way my friend  crunch time I fear'. I reached out a few more times and got thumbs up or hearts. Peter Moulds let me know Tuesday that Jan had died. He had lot of friends here and over there and his memory will live on in all of our hearts. Here at the Museum, Jan's legacy is all around. He, with the help of Jim Dunn, boxed up and sent 14 of his beloved ELCON fans to be put on display. Those, and the two Egyptian GE's and the Nahman GE that he finished in "Rick's Jappan" will honor his memory. We've all lost a Mate.
