Mike Morris Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 I recently purchased a "collar for a 9 inch Emerson XX645 fan. The seller apparently couldn't separate the pot metal collar from the pot metal neck. So they sent me the whole thing. I can't get to physical with these pieces obviously, but I have completely struck out trying to separate the pieces. So far I have tried gentle persuasion with a lot of penetrating oil, a bit of heat with a heat gun not a torch etc. Hasn't budged at all. Thinking of trying to see if I can return it since it is useless to me in this state and if I break it I'm out of luck. I think the pot metal has swollen and is not going to come loose. Only other way I can think is to drill the neck out slowly and gently. Destroys the neck but might save the collar. Not thrilled with this, but less thrilled with having the burden of trying to separate these delicate pieces put on me. Any ideas on other methods to try? Any help is much appreciated. Mike Quote
David Kilnapp Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 (edited) Hi Mike. Would you post of picture or two of what you describing? It would be helpful. Thanks Edited September 1, 2023 by David Kilnapp Quote
Russ Huber Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 (edited) Mike, I would assume you have removed the two screws from the collar and collar adjustment spring loaded plunger. With those removed did you clamp the pivot into a bench vice and get a firm grip on the collar and try to twist it free from the pivot. If despite this the collar remains stubbornly frozen to the pivot that would be a heads up any further action would involve risk of damage. If you choose to risk it, I would put some heat resistant heavy gloves on and with a propane torch heat the collar up until you start to see the pot metal alloy start to bubble out and then with your gloved hand carefully grip the collar and try to twist it free. The bubbling out areas on the collar from heating can be wire wheeled clean if it survives the heating process. Edited September 1, 2023 by Russ Huber Quote
Russ Huber Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 #2 Risk method. With both screws removed and adjustment plunger removed from the collar, rest the lip of each side of the collar on the bench vice jaws. With a correct diameter deep well socket, carefully try to tap the pivot free from the collar. Quote
Mike Morris Posted September 1, 2023 Author Posted September 1, 2023 I will get some pictures, but it looks exactly like the pictures Russ posted minus the screws etc.. I have already tried method 2 with no success. Person I bought it from is willing to refund, but this leaves me without the collar that I will need. Will try heat one more time, but will try to stop short of any damage that will void the possibility of refund. I believe they honestly thought I could use it in its current state, not realizing the collar needs to rotate around the neck. Quote
Lane Shirey Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 Doesn’t Jerry Bravi make the small collars as well as the large ones? Quote
Jim Henderson Posted September 2, 2023 Posted September 2, 2023 Mike. I'd return the neck and collar and move on. Quote
Steve Sherwood Posted September 2, 2023 Posted September 2, 2023 The pot metal is probably swelled up. Quote
Patrick Ray Posted September 2, 2023 Posted September 2, 2023 I'd just grab a collar from Bravi and be done with it. His collars are pure perfection! Quote
Mike Morris Posted September 2, 2023 Author Posted September 2, 2023 (edited) I didn't know he made the smaller collars. I will reach out to him. He is making a blade for my 14648, looking forward to seeing that arrive. I will take the advice of the group and return collar assembly and move on from this problem. Thank You everyone Mike Edited September 2, 2023 by Mike Morris Quote
