Lane Shirey
With November approaching and very little communication to date about this issue, I thought I’d send out an update since there are a lot of folks who have volunteered to help the effort. Be patient, trust me there will be a need for your efforts, just not quite yet.. There has been a lot of activity happening in the background to hopefully set the stage for some good news about the old forum in the months to come (fingers crossed). More to come on that as there are developments we will update you. It’s a complex topic and I assure you we are doing our best to deliver the best outcome. The second area of activity is the development of the Fan Wiki. The Wiki will become the first place to start when researching brands and restoration. It will house a comprehensive list of all manufacturers and eventually histories for as many manufacturers as we can gather from our membership. It will also contain a glossary of common fan terms and both general and brand-specific restoration tips. We are currently in the process of gathering all Fan Collector articles that fit the Wiki categories listed above, editing them to fit the format (shortening them in most cases) this will give the Wiki a kickstart and provide a central location for all of these useful articles from the magazine back issues. We do need volunteers to provide brand histories, so if you have one somewhere in your hard drive, please offer it to the club. All articles will be credited to the author or contributor. Send me a message and I’ll give you my email to send it. Alternatively these histories can be assembled from various posts on the old forum. In most cases, complete histories exist, but they’re spread across many posts and threads. If you’d like to help with this effort, please contact me. This type of Herculean effort can’t be done without helpful, open minded people willing to volunteer their valuable time and expertise . I’d like to thank Larry Hancock, Jamie Horner, Pat Daggs, Annie, Stan and the board for their unprecedented level of collaboration in moving this project forward on behalf of future fan collectors. Without you all, this project couldn’t move forward . I’ve been impressed by all of your dedication to the organization, and this project so far. So you have my “THANKS”! It’s been my pleasure working closely with each of you! Much more to come, but the roots have been established and the tree is beginning to grow. Cheers everyone! Russ Huber
So, is there an update from Larry Hancock on his post of Sept. 21st below? Jim from data1 it appears has a backup for the old forum, it also sounds like Jim has the computer skillset to accomplish the task. "I spoke to Jim with Data1 Systems yesterday. He has a backup of our old forum. He said that he needs to setup some servers anyway and will see what he can do to set us up with access to the old forum. Stay tuned." ~ Larry Hancock. Russ Huber
The old website forum/BST has so much priceless information and images on such a monumental scale that to salvage the old website as it is to be accessed by search engine is imperative. If there is a price to be paid within reason to an individual such as this Jim with data1 systems, it is well worth it. Once again, no disrespect to the individuals who want to painstakingly retrieve data in wiki form. As an AFCA historian, I not only contributed vast amounts of information on the old website, I go back to it with frequency using key words in the search engine to pull images and refresh information posted in past to contribute to numerous posts on the new website. Once this ability is gone on the old website, it will not be the end of the world, but will be a significant deficit to future posts and questions. Accessing google books and patents is not as user friendly as in the past to add to the pile.
Lane Shirey
Russ, we understand your concern and that is the intent of our work, however there are complications as well as some expenses that have yet to be defined and resolved with regards to saving the old forum, so for now I don’t want to raise hopes. The conversation and progress is far beyond the post that you pasted. Please be patient and rest assured that we all have the best interests and preferences of the club in mind. The Wiki project is separate and independent from the old forum project. And in the perfect world, both will exist. The Wiki will not replace the old forum, instead it will be an additional resource. So for now, please hang tight. As there is factual data to pass along, I will. I appreciate that there are many of you hanging on our actions, and would like a quick answer, but id rather give you accurate and honest information. I was hoping to hear from the author of the underlined post above as to what Jim from Data1 can accomplish to conserve the old website. Leslie Weinberg
I'm very new here so please forgive me if I'm mistaken but during my search for info on my fan, I think I have accessed both the new forum and the old. e.g. -https://www.afcaforum.com/forum5/. One day when I had trouble accessing the old forum, I also found it in the interenet archive's wayback machine. If you haven't explored the internet archive, I recommend it - it's a pretty fun rabbit hole! https://afcaforum.com/forum2/55281.html

This new website to the best of my knowledge does not offer that option. The disadvantage to the old website is the online Google access to key words being used by unknowledgeable guests who are researching a fan motor find of theirs for monetary gain on the web. 8 chances out of 10 the guests end up asking twice + times what someone will pay on marketing websites. Ebay, Facebook marketplace, and Craigslist is full of fans sitting dead in the water with astronomical prices on them.
