  2. Well, I don't know if its pregnant or not, but I DO know it is a badge over lead. 🙂 The fact is the lead dome on the etched badge is MORE prominent than the earlier style. I had the etched badge off to clean it. I tried to fit the earlier style badge (extra badge I have) on it. I would have to shave the lead dome down to get the earlier badge to seat properly. The brass guard with etched badge pictured below makes me question what direction Emerson was going with their guard before the steel guard was implemented.
  3. I came across this 16" bb/sc non-oscillator from tidewater Va...rusty as all but nothing much pitted, it's brushed and is a DC motor by the tag. Unknown running condition but I'll get a rectifier, it seems decent inside and was wanting to date it so as to maybe cheer me up enough to do a restoration....any ideas?

    Simplex fan Oscillator

Anthony don't let a few punches in the guts get you down. I am here for you fan brother. Mix a few of these up in the safety and comfort of your home, by the time you get to #3, you won't remember what a silly Simplex was. All you will experience is the bliss feeling of ......comfortably numb. 🙂

    Simplex fan Oscillator

If it makes you feel any better, it was bought at a northern Indiana Amish estate sale. Meaning it was probably cheap, very cheap.

Hard to tell from angle but the etched style badge does not appear to be the pregnant style.

Do You Leave Your Fans Running Unattended?

I will leave fans I've restored running, sometimes 24/7, in the summer months. If they run long hours, I check the lubrication every few weeks or so. The fans are the only form of air conditioning I have in much of my house. I'm more comfortable leaving a restored antique fan running than a new Chinese fan from a big box store.
  8. This guard appears to be remaining stock from the 21xxx models of 16.
  9. Both examples have badges over lead. And the cast lead backings have different shape on both examples. The earlier example badge will not fit on the later example lead backing.

You'd never know anyone was in Louisiana? I've spoken to many very helpful folks in other states but no one with in hours of Metairie, La. has chimed in? I don't live in New Orleans, and I'm thinking that may be worth saying.
  12. If you can get the blade off the rotor, the blade will probably fit through the cage. That is why dime store fans can be such a pain! They can assemble them in a hurry with no thoughts towards maintenance.

Where do the lead backed pregnant badges fall in line? Just 19 series?
  14. It's really not chaotic. Long tags were out 17 due to the handle on the 12" and 16" models. Old stock brass guards and trimmings used up early 17. Brass guards and struts replaced with steel mid to late fan motor season 17, or into 18 season. WW1 war material needs and shortages. I wonder if Bill Hoehn had 1917-18 Emerson catalogues. There might be some insight into when the stamped steel blade hub came into use.

Do You Leave Your Fans Running Unattended?

My antique ceiling fans run 24/7. Desk fans are on whenever we are home, but do run all night.
  17. Emerson sure did go through a lot of add-ons in that period. 19xxx fans with and without handles, long and short tags, short tags no handles etc etc. Now try collecting one of every variant! 🤣
  18. They were. Emerson announced the carry handles for the 17 season. No mention of carry handles in the 1916 Emerson monthly. However, there would be remaining 21xxx 12" and 16" models manufactured in 16 to market early 17 season. Why not plop some handles on them and a square tag along with the new 24xxx models. 🙂

Do You Leave Your Fans Running Unattended?

I try not to. Had a 12" GE QB running once while do things around the house. One of those plastic bags got sucked in the back and stopped the blade. I followed my nose to the burning smell. Since, been cautious, but we use them while in the room.
  20. Russ, I do believe the carry handles were implemented on the 21xxx fans as I have seen 21666 fans with and without carry handles. I have a carry handle version.

Do You Leave Your Fans Running Unattended?

It really depends on the fan for me. I have an Emerson hassock and an Emerson Longnose ceiling fan that I leave running 24/7, only turning them off to clean or oil. Will shut them off when on vacation. But some other fans I'll only run while in the room, and I have some that I will run only when I'm home (but I may be in a different room).
  22. I personally do not leave any fan running while I am away.

    1610 Strut Shape?

If you can find a big enough container that can be sealed, you could try positioning the blades over a couple paper towels dampened with ammonia. Not touching the paper towels - you just want the blades to be exposed to the fumes. Seal the container and wait a couple hours, then check. I’ve had good luck aging freshly turned brass knobs this way till they have a genteel shine. Here’s a pic showing the switch knob on a hassock fan project I did; the shiny brass knob was exposed to ammonia fumes for 2-3 hours till it looked like it does in the pic.

    1610 Strut Shape?

Got the 1610 about done. For reference my 5410 cage and struts fit perfectly on the 1610. See the pick below. Also a shot of the completed fan done up in plain brass. Need to figure out the best way to tone it down a bit. Too shiny!
  25. You can read actual Emerson documentation in a Google book compilation of the Emerson Monthly editions by scrolling down starting 1917-1921 following month by month. The years of 1917-18 and fan motor details are there. The Emerson Monthly - Google Books
  26. I have a 24666 with cast hub and steel guard. Serial 735672.
