A customer brought in a 16” Westy that had stopped working.
I opened up the base and saw that the switch was getting power and power was going up the headwire, but that there was no resistance on any of the three motor wires. I opened up the cover plate where the headwire went into the motor and could see that two wires were broken. The connections were wrapped up in a ball of petrified friction tape that prevented me from pulling the slack out to connect a new wire.
So, time to pull the stator. Stamped steel Westys are famously difficult to pull the stator, but I made some ring tools a few years ago that make it easy. You rest the motor on the ring and bang it on a concrete floor a dozen or so times.
The coil slides out.
Then, carefully cut open the connection to the old headwire.
and splice on the new headwire.
then, use long threaded rod to pull the coil back into the motor housing.
