Bohan was a military man as well as a venture capitalist: Col. Bohan began his army career as a first lieutenant under Gen. Pershing in the Mexican campaign. In World War I. he was the youngest major in combat. At that time he was commanding officer of a 155th howitzer battalion in the 123d field artillery, serving with the 33d division in the Toul sector. Received Silver Star Col. Bohan was awarded the silver star for his part in the Meuse-Argonne campaign. After leaving the service in 1919, he joined the reserve corps, and was commanding officer of a reserve regiment in Chicago when he was promoted to colonel in 1931. During this time he also was affiliated with the building construction business. Col. Bohan returned to active army duty in the spring of 1942. He attended the field officers' school at Fort Sill, Okla., and served in the replacement center there until February, 1943, when he was transferred to Fort Bragg, N.C. Awarded Legion Of Merit At this post, Col. Bohan was commanding officer of the 4th regiment and trained thousands of soldiers under simulated battle conditions. He was awarded the Legion of Merit upon his retirement as regiment commander in January, 1946. He returned to the Chicago building construction business. Mike Kearns
1937 - Gaylord Fresh'ND-Aire still not a "conditioner" March 3 1937: "Electric Light & Power" magazine, Volume 15, author Ell C. Bennett - 1937 - "These Gaylord Air Circulators are manufactured exclusively for the Gaylord Company by the Russell Electric Company. There is a competent Gaylord sales and service distributor ready to serve you in each major market. ..." - Information thanks to Russ Huber From the trade journal "Electrical Contracting" October 1937 - In 1937, unfortunately for Gaylord, a big fish named E.L. Cord noticed the little fish was doing very well selling circulator fans: Errett Lobban Cord (1894-1974), aka E.L. Cord—a transportation magnate and dice-rolling businessman who would have made a fine golf partner for William Randolph Hearst and Howard Hughes. Equal parts charming and ruthless, Cord owned a controlling share in dozens of different companies across his lifetime, including the likes of the original Checker Taxi Cab Company, Duesenberg, Cord Motor Car, Auburn Car Co. and American Airlines. One of his other pet properties was the Chicago Electric Manufacturing Company. According to Griffith Borgeson’s 1984 book, Errett Lobban Cord: His Empire, His Motor Cars, Chicago Electric was actually one of the young tycoon’s personal “favorite companies, one that he downright loved, and of which he was very proud. . . . There was something ingeniously catchy about its products, all of which gave excellent service and were, in addition, priced to give fits to the giants in the field, such as General Electric.” According to Borgeson, Cord used to tell his friends, “If you like a certain kind of soap, buy that stock. Don’t let somebody else tell you what to buy. Buy what YOU think is a good company, and then keep informed about the progress that it’s making.” He must have like what he saw in Ed Gaylord's endeavors. He bought the patents and rights to manufacture the entire catalog of Gaylord's circulator producer/manufacturer, Russell Electric. As if that wasn't bad enough, Earle W. Ballentine, the vice president of Russell Electric was also the president of Solar Industries, the maker of the Ballentine motors that went into the Gaylord Fresh'ND-Aires, so now, no more castings, motors or assembled components: Aerofan circulator made by Russell Electric Co. - Image thanks to Russ Huber: Another Aerofan pedestal, image credited to Joseph Sweetman and the Ann Arbor Historical Society- Russell Electric Circulator Russell Electric is still using Ballentine motors. - Images courtesy of Ingrid Litten: Gibbs Manufacturing Corporation makes a one year appearance -1937- only 16 and 20-inch Gibb data plates - Thanks to Joey Katona Note the early, rubber vibration insulated blade on this 20 inch Gibb: As of May 1937, Fresh'ND-Aire begins preparations towards to future of production.
