Reassembling this Emerson 27666

Hi all, 

I'm still working on reassembling the 27666 which I foolishly dismantled without taking pictures years ago. 

Obviously I'll get the stator in there and clean the hardware in this picture first. 

But I'm struggling with where all those washers go and I can't help but think I might be missing some critical piece. I understand the oil gets recirculated through the bearing and I can't see how it wouldn't all drip out the rear of the motor housing once I put it together.IMG_20211112_074457.thumb.jpg.ee74061a2dbc8cec61360546b66a7226.jpg Is there something else I need for reassembly (besides foresight)?

That’s not a spring you’re seeing it’s a worm gear. The oil should not spill out if the gearbox if put back together properly. 
 

In regards to the fiber washers, there purpose is to eliminate play in the rotor. You want maybe 1/16-1/8 of play in the rotor once it’s all done. I would put a few on the back and a few on the front. Once it’s all put together if rotor is very loose add more, if it’s too tight remove some. There’s no rule on this each fan is different. I have a Trojan that has maybe 15 fiber washers it’s crazy.

Thanks for the info @Ben Guegain. Safe to say there should be a worm gear present then, huh? Because I most definitely do not have one in my bag of parts from when this thing came apart.  😞

Oh that's the whole thing?!? Awesome! I thought by the patent picture there was supposed to be something that ran up the entire shaft of the hollow bearing. Sweet!!!  Thank you!!! 😁

Earlier Emersons did not have the "spring" that runs the entire length of the oscillator drive shaft as shown in the 1930 illustration.  I'm pretty certain that your 27666 predates the adoption of that.

It's strange to me; without the coiled thing I cannot see how oil is going to travel up the hollow drive shaft and properly lubricate.

Mr. Tom Newcity posted a fine article about Emerson oiling, including a cutaway gearbox and the amount of oil needed to fill the system.

It is somewhere on the old forum site, and it will answer your questions.

The oil level in the shaft is such that the bearings always have oil. Also, the shaft and rotor bore are slightly tapered, so unless your fan is very worn, not enough shims on the back of the rotor will cause it to bind. Keep this in mind when setting up the end play of the rotor. You must test to see "where you're at."
