Cast blade hubs 1917-18, and ratchet case (ball detent) oscillator wheel 1917-18. Find the improved oscillator wheel adjustment case on a 24xxx model, it was a later replacement.

Russ I'll go along with the oscillator since many of those cratered early on, but I have owned quite a few 24s with the stamped steel hub. Hard to believe that many had replacement blades.

Images in the 1917-1919 Emerson Monthly bulletins would support my statement about the blade hubs. But after spending some time reading through the 1917-19 fan motor introductions per year I can't validate the year of the introduction of the stamped hub. So, I stand corrected. 🙂 18 Bulletin images support cast hub. 19 bulletin images support stamped hub.

The ratchet case oscillator wheel has been validated still in use on early 19 models and discontinued.

If in fact you're correct, and Emerson implemented the stamp steel hub somewhere between 1917 and 18, there would be 4 transitional examples, the last missing from my 3 examples posted having a stamped blade hub. The 3 examples I posted here are as found. I added nothing.

Well, Stan, I have had a few 24xxx models with stamped hubs myself.  Just to take away any shade of doubt, here you go. I even changed the title to "4" variants. 🙂

It really seems like Emerson used anything on the shelf with those. Small base, big base; steel cage, brass cage; cast hub, stamped hub. Oh we have some more parts we found, lets use those. Lots of changes in a very short two year time frame.

Hey Russ-

Are you aware of any transitional 21646 that had stamped hubs, or were they all known to be cast hubs for that model? Thanks...

A 21xxx model with a stamped blade hub WOULD be a replacement blade.

There actually is a sequence of changes to the 24xxx models, that being the newly implemented carry handle in 17, fan bases, old stock brass guards used up early 17, second brass guard with evolved etched badge eventually to steel guards. The tough part is just when some of these changes took place 17-18. Most changes would have taken place in 17 the way I see it.

The cast blade hubs to stamped hubs is not clear other than images in the 1917-18 Emerson Monthly editions. Etc. 1919 edition images show stamped hubs.

You can read actual Emerson documentation in a Google book compilation of the Emerson Monthly editions by scrolling down starting 1917-1921 following month by month.  The years of 1917-18 and fan motor details are there.

Russ,  I do believe the carry handles were implemented on the 21xxx fans as I have seen 21666 fans with and without carry handles. I have a carry handle version.

They were. Emerson announced the carry handles for the 17 season. No mention of carry handles in the 1916 Emerson monthly. However, there would be remaining 21xxx 12" and 16" models manufactured in 16 to market early 17 season. Why not plop some handles on them and a square tag along with the new 24xxx models. 🙂

Emerson sure did go through a lot of add-ons in that period.  19xxx fans with and without handles, long and short tags, short tags no handles etc etc.  Now try collecting one of every variant! 🤣

It's really not chaotic. Long tags were out 17 due to the handle on the 12" and 16" models. Old stock brass guards and trimmings used up early 17. Brass guards and struts replaced with steel mid to late fan motor season 17, or into 18 season. WW1 war material needs and shortages.

I wonder if Bill Hoehn had 1917-18 Emerson catalogues. There might be some insight into when the stamped steel blade hub came into use.

Where do the lead backed pregnant badges fall in line?

Just 19 series?

Both examples have badges over lead. And the cast lead backings have different shape on both examples. The earlier example badge will not fit on the later example lead backing.

This guard appears to be remaining stock from the 21xxx models of 16.

Hard to tell from angle but the etched style badge does not appear to be the pregnant style.

Well, I don't know if its pregnant or not, but I DO know it is a badge over lead. 🙂 The fact is the lead dome on the etched badge is MORE prominent than the earlier style. I had the etched badge off to clean it. I tried to fit the earlier style badge (extra badge I have) on it. I would have to shave the lead dome down to get the earlier badge to seat properly.

The brass guard with etched badge pictured below makes me question what direction Emerson was going with their guard before the steel guard was implemented.
