Jim Roadt
It seems like such a great idea and relatively easy and fun to do with beautiful results.......except in my hands. I used extreme mirror black APP powder coat. coated very nicely and cooked at 400 degrees for 10 minutes as directed came out satin and grainy like under coating on a 1930 ford pickup. $#@!!!!!!!! Jim Roadt
tried another oven and reheated. No success Bill has given me another technique I will try. heat the part in oven or propane torch to 300 spray with powder and then cure Edited November 5 by Jim Roadt Spelling
Russ Huber
If further attempts fail, some powder coating businesses have acid tanks to remove failed powder coating attempts. I know as the one I go to has one. It works slick to remove all powder coat down to bare metal. I would think in your area there are a number of powder coaters. Patrick Ray
One thing I know powder coaters watch is temp of the item they are coating. Your fan probably needs to be at 400 degrees for 10 min., not just in the 400 degree oven for 10 min. I'm sure the powder wasn't hot enough to flow yet. Chunks of iron take a while to get up to temp. Get an infrared heat gun to monitor temps.
Bill Dunlap
I've been powder coating for 25 years or so. I've never seen uncured powder so uniform before. I suspect they put texture powder in your order instead of mirror black.
Lawrence Smith
That sure would look great for a textured finish later style fans used. Sorry for the word& results you obtained. Good luck with correcting to get desired results

Jim Roadt
tried again with new extreme mirror black . The powder went on nice and even no problem. Cooked 10 mins 400 degrees as directed ....nothing did additional time until the casting was 400 degrees per infrared......it's shinier and blacker but still not working...#$%@&"
Mike Morris
Guys feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I have done some powder coating and don't claim to be a professional, but I have always understood that the cure timer doesn't start until the casting reaches the temperature specified for that powder. So it may have to be in oven for some time before that cast iron hits the 400 degree mark and the cure time begins. I got a similar effect a couple of times when the coating was not heavy enough or didn't heat long enough for it to flow out properly. I am assuming that this is a single coat color and does not require a clear top coat or a base coat such as chrome etc. Edited November 16 by Mike Morris
Bill Dunlap
Jim, Take a torch and run it over the surface until it starts to flow out. If it does, then it hasn't cured at the correct temp. If it doesn't, I suspect you're not applying it thick enough. I would hot coat these parts myself. It is the best way to achieve the "poured on" finish. Cheers, Bill
