My first Manhattan #1 Motor

I saw this thing on eBay and it immediately caught my eye.  At first, I thought it might not have been original.  Most of the ones I've seen are fan but this one is a generator of some sort.  It looks original if you consider how much work went into making the front and back copper/brass plate....I will have to examine this closely to see if it is original when it gets here.

That's really neat. The big gear/disc looks like it's die cast.

It does look neat.  I need to hook it up to one of my steam engine with a pulley setup.

Manhattan...missing the base.  I went with the half base model to keep all them accessories that came with this purchase.   Need to smooth out the sharp corners.

What I see is some sort
of motor-driven mech.

There appears to be a
limit switch which can
be actuated in either
direction.

I have no idea what that Manhattan No.1 object was used for , but that is the second similar one I have see on the internet. I suspect that could have been part of some control mechanism (limiter, damper, alarm, mode train, unk ??) and therefore that unit may not be an amateur or homemade contrivance. The total array of gears and their mountings is moderately complex. I would keep it complete and as a mystery since the basic Manhattan #1 was a bit simple (and a little basic) and that unit with the gears and lights shows a great adaptability for that simple motor. Just my opinion.

(pic of similar unit snatched off the internet, catalog pic from Manhattan’s offering circa 1902)

Sounds silly, but I could not locate the proper size copper brushes for my Manhattan.  So, I drew them up to have them printed.  I also curved the ends so it sits properly.

Also, much cheaper to print this way.  Just need to cut them off when I get them.

I wonder if that device was for model railroading? Maybe some sort of switching device for controlling crossing signals? 🤔
