Hello all

I just picked up a R&M 2417B with brass 4 blade fan.  Does anybody have any insight or experience with these?  Its in rough shape and I'll post some pics shortly.  I found a little bit on the old forum site.

Thanks

Here are a few pics.  It looks like it is missing the oscillating arm linkage.  I did try to power it up but it appears the speed switch may need to be rewound.  I started a few cleaning a few sections with my pedestal buffer and some jewelers rouge to see how the brass would clean up.  It appears to be the 16" model.  Does anyone know roughly what years these were made?

Thanks

c. 1918 to c. 1924. In the mid 20s, R&M changed their list numbers along with the oscillator wheel and blade hub design. Yours is likely c. 1919 or later with the welded cage. When they switched over from the wrapped brass cages to the steel in 1918, they wrapped the steel wires for a year or so before welding them.

Also check the headwire around the motor opening, these models of R&m are problematic. Your coil looks toasted , make sure you have good ohms on the stator

It could be just wiring.I don’t see a burnt coil.I’ve had them looking worse and turned out fine. With a good cleaning, wiring and insulation varnish it may be ok…Maybe?

I have a 12 inch Western Electric that is the same model essentially. I have the 16" version but haven't gotten around to restoring it. I also have a 16 inch DC version The pinstriping is close to the original positions. The oscillator arms are hard to come by, not sure why they disappear so much. Luckily I found 3 at fan fair from parts fans. Pretty much all the small parts from a 12 inch version of these fans will fit on a 16 inch if that helps you source anything. The stator, cage, housing, base and rotor are larger. The oscillator disk is made from more fragile pot metal I think. I've broke one barely applying torque trying to remove it so if it sticks I'd just leave it on. The choke coil on these are often bad as well but all 3 of these era R&M and rebadges I have restored the electrical was fine just needed new headwiring and cleaned up. FB_IMG_1661118380173.thumb.jpg.6b6ceac6f6ece651f5cf394d260804cd.jpgFB_IMG_1661118389189.thumb.jpg.c646d59bbe3001496a2b7f8340e5571e.jpgFB_IMG_1661119010489.thumb.jpg.ac2716572e497bab09396c8f1576c775.jpg

Thanks for all the help guys.  I hope to tear into this over the next few weeks as my work schedule allows.  I will keep you posted.  Steve, I will definitely take you up on an oscillating linkage if you have one.

Thanks!

Well, I had some spare time today and I started tearing down the fan.  There was definitely some broken wires on the switch coil, so I'll need to get that fixed.  I pulled the rotor and stator and it has the three head wire stator.  Does any know what a good set of ohm readings should be for this type of head?  Depending on the wires I clipped my meter to, I got around 27-30ohms and also 150-170ohms.  I'm not sure if I'm measuring at the points.  I was also able to polish up the blade a little and it looks like it will clean up nice.   thumbnail.thumb.jpg.12f2b9554f4a4f075543a26976b0a200.jpgthumbnail.thumb.jpg.e4eaab72f45757ea59a16b17388dcea6.jpgthumbnail.thumb.jpg.fd826cf2140eea55aed1115312b0478e.jpgthumbnail.jpg.d7d773f7e1c67622d51be4d36759a983.jpgthumbnail.jpg.1e0361ca8dc4fedf865169db9d3735bb.jpgthumbnail.jpg.d6c2eb4e1db610cab7859338a51d4ec3.jpg
