Paul Carmody Posted November 4, 2021 Posted November 4, 2021 (edited) I just took purchase of an AOU V-5 12" brass bell, and with a quick search on the old forum I discovered that it is first year 1920.It has had a less than perfect but fair restoration done on it previously.I was looking at the cage, and under a chip in the paint I could see brass on the rear ring.Out comes the magnet with some disappointment ,its only the rear ring.Am I off base to assume the ring was leftover from a previous year? Also wanted to add.It has a perfect ID tag and has spec# and all other information, but the serial# is completely blank. It has never been stamped? Edited November 4, 2021 by Paul Carmody Quote
Stan Adams Posted November 4, 2021 Posted November 4, 2021 There was a brass shortage due to the war, GE did like Emerson & used anything available. There are also a lot of brass plated steel blades around that time. I have a 16" six wing AOU in the bedroom window, thought it had brass blades until I saw them rusting from Houston humidity. 1 Quote
Larry Miceli Posted November 9, 2021 Posted November 9, 2021 The AOU V5 should also be a 4 wire set up without a speed coil. I restored one of those as my first fan. Lots of info on them on the old forum pages. 1 Quote
Paul Carmody Posted November 10, 2021 Author Posted November 10, 2021 (edited) Thanks for the replys.I haven't opened it up yet Larry to see.It was supposed to be restored but I spent two days trying to balance the claimed smooth and quiet operation.I noticed a lot of slop and a little jerking in oscillator.Just needs washers I think. So Not being sure now I will have to check wiring to see if it makes my spec.It runs well though. Amps are good and it hardly gets warm.I have so many project fans I thought I would buy a restored one. That's what I get for thinking.:).it's all good.Overall it's a nice fan.
