Roger Borg
I recall reading only to put enough grease (red n tacky) to cover gears. And too much is stressful, ie churning butter instead of providing lubrication. BUT, a recent FB post contradicted what I thought was correct. So, I'm posing the question at large: What is the proper amount for an oscillator gear box? A lot, or a little? Thanks...
Patrick Ray
I use Amsoil grease, but like the Lucas Red n Tacky, it has great clinging properties and doesn't sling off. I smear a coat on the gears then about a finger dip more into the gear box. These fans don't see the loads, speeds, or heat that wheel bearings see, so the grease will stay put on the mating surfaces. Plus being synthetic, it's already miles ahead of whatever was used 100+ years ago.
Anthony Lindsey
Couple questions: Are you actually using these fans daily? Are they getting used like they were 70-80-90 years ago? Or are the collection fans that get very little use? An hour or 2 a week or less? That would dictate how important the amount of grease actually is. Patrick Ray
Few of the fans I greased like this are daily runners. Sometimes running for days or weeks on end. I use both Amsoil grease and oil for lubrication on my fans.
