Gordon Lawson Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 Stupid Newbie question, was wanting to change the grease in a 1954 Emerson 77646 SG, looks like it could be original, and can't seem to remove bull gear at bottom of gearbox. Is there a trick to getting most of the old grease out som I can go back with a lithium based replacement grease? Or maybe it is fine if some remnants are left behind? I am getting out as much as a I can with q-tips, towels, small screwdrivers, etc. Thanks. Gordon Lawson Quote
Stan Adams Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 You can dismantle the gear box, but not really critically necessary. You are not looking at any high speed, high heat, or high friction issues. Dig out as much old grease as you can & put new grease in. I have been using standard wheel bearing grease for many years, but any modern grease will do. I'm out at Lake Houston if you have any issues. 1 Quote
Lane Shirey Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 A product called strike hold melts away that old grease and residue. designed for gun enthusiasts but it works perfect for gearboxes. Quote
