John Nyman Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 Hello all, I'm new to Galaxy fans from the 80's but I had a young fellow in the store the other day asking how to remove the oscillator knob on one of my store fans (his was busted)...an 80's Galaxy table-top oscillator. 1970's and 80's fans are great but usually I find them to Not be so needy so I've never worked on one. I tried removing the knob from my working, store fan, but no luck at all. Am I missing something simple here? Quote
Tom Zapf Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 THERE ARE SEVERAL TYPES OF KNOBS . ONE HAS A SCREW DOWN THE CENTER OF THE TOP. ONE HAS TWO PLASTIC TABS ON THE KNOB SIDES THAT CLICK IN TO A RIDGE AROUND THE KNOW AND USUALLY CAN BE POPPED OFF WITH A SMALL SCREWDRIVER THROUGH ONE OF THE MOTOR COOLING SLOTS ..THERE IS ONE WHERE THE KNOB SIDES HAVE A SPLIT IN THEM WITH A WIRE METAL RING COLLAR AROUND THE BOTTOM OF THE KNOB TO COMPRESS THE SIDES BY THE SLITS INTO A GROOVE. THIS LAST ONE IS THE HARDEST AND AGAIN YOU HAVE TO FINAGLE THROUGH THE COOLING SLOTS WITH A SMALL SCREWDRIVE TO SEE IF YOU CAN DISLODGE THE METAL COLLAR .... GOOD LUCK WITH IT ! Quote
John Nyman Posted May 4, 2023 Author Posted May 4, 2023 I'll get a pic and post it tomorrow...I know, rookie move on my part. Thanks Tom, I thought there would be a screw but no such luck so I figured it would be one of those PITA arrangements like you mentioned. I keep telling myself "I love old fans, I love old fans" but some days I wonder. Quote
Tom Zapf Posted May 4, 2023 Posted May 4, 2023 IF YOU CAN LOOK THROUGH THE REAR COOLING SLOTS IT IS USUALLY PRETTY EASY TO SEE IF THERE IS A SILVER WIRE RING AROUND THE BASE OF THE KNOB. YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL PULLING THEM OFF AS THE TOP OF THE OSCILLATOR BOX SOMETIMES IS PLASTIC AND THE WHOLE THING CAN BREAK AND THE LITTLE SPRINGS AND BALL BEARINGS ARE LOST Quote
