What is used for oiler ports packing material for an Emerson 79646 AP-G

The oil hole in the motor case cover (front & rear) were packed with the “weaved” material.   What do you folks use today as a replacement?

Also, the dark material was wrapped/stuffed in the recess of the front nose cone around the shaft.  Is that standard for these fans or a home grown oiling solution?  (Or maybe to keep it from leaking ??)
