Jerry Van
I dug my Emerson 16646 out of the mothballs. I tried it out to find that it won't self start. I gave it a push, apparently in the wrong direction, and it took off but the blade quickly unscrewed and fell off. Kind of funny actually. Turns out, the motor will run in either direction, depending on which way you push it. Once it's running, all is well. Purrs along nicely with no overheating. My suspicions as why this is happening is centered on the my observation that someone, long ago, apparently replaced the head wires. Could it be that in doing so, they got something messed up, or since it otherwise runs well, on all 3 speeds, could the problem be in stator windings? Stan Adams
First thing I would do is check the ohms on all three stator wires, mark them first, but you will need to disconnect the wire going to the choke to get an accurate reading. If you have continuity on all three, it is most likely the choke. If not, you have a broken headwire, bad solder joint, or bad stator.
