Kyle Shelstad Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 Picked this beauty up in South Minneapolis, runs very well, and almost no rust, very rare for MN box fans, tue bottoms always rust. Quote
Tom Zapf Posted July 12, 2024 Posted July 12, 2024 PLUS IT STILL HAS THE HANDLE WHICH MANY DO NOT . THEY ARE GOOD SOLID FANS AND THE BETTER OF ANYTHING WITH PLASTIC BLADES. THE MOTORS ARE NOTED FOR NOT EVEN HAVING WICKING IN THE OIL CAVITY SO IF YOU ARE HANGING ON TO IT , GETTING SOME OIL IN IT IS A GOOD IDEA...VERY NICE FIND! Quote
Kyle Shelstad Posted July 14, 2024 Author Posted July 14, 2024 I cheat I make a small hole in the rear bearing cap where you cant see it, and I pump it full of oil. then I plug the hole so dust doesn't get in. I've got 3 of these 5 wing, and a older 3 wing metal blade one with the original box Quote
Andrew Cook Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 That’s awesome!! The GE box fans are one of my favorite box fan. Great looking machine. Quote
Tom Zapf Posted July 16, 2024 Posted July 16, 2024 THAT IS A METHOF FOR OILING THEM, BUT ONE CAVEAT, THE LATER 1970S VERSIONS HAVE VERY LITTLE WICKING TO ABSORB THE OIL AND DONT HAVE THE STIPS UP THE OUTSIDE OF THE BEARING LIKE THE EARLIER 1954 THROUGH EARLY 1970'S DO SO YOU MIGHT HAVE DRIP OUT . GOOD LUCK WITH IT Quote
Levi Mevis Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 (edited) I had found the 3 speed electrically reversable version of that fan at the local recycling center several years back but unfortunately the motor locked up on it and I didn't know about how to properly oil up the motors on these old GE Box Fans at the time (I was a member on here at the time but I was getting mixed instructions on how to repair the motor on the fan and I ended up destroying the motor because I attempted to pop the back cover off of the motor housing of the fan and I used an old 20# hammer to do so which resulted in the cap coming off but it was damaged bad enough that it wouldn't go back on anymore, and the advice to drill a hole in the back cover came too late because I had already popped the back off with a hammer which was suggested by someone else previously, and so unfortunately I had to scrap the fan out because I accidentally ruined the motor.) 😢 Edited August 7, 2024 by Levi Mevis Quote
