Jimmy Vineyard
Have a 10 inch Westinghouse single speed and it's running hot or what I perceive to be hot. Say 125-130 and after a while, inches up even more. In general is that too hot and it's just the center of the housing. Other parts of the hosing are cooler. With blade on too. Thanks in advance. Paul Carmody
It will be cooler with blade on that’s for sure .Im really not sure of what fan you have.Early Westinghouse’s run slightly warm and later ones I understand as hot runners.Im not too familiar with the later ones ,so how hot is too hot I can’t say for sure.125 to 130 seems acceptable even 135.I personally would not run a fan that got to 140 With the blade on.Not to say that it may be normal for some fans. I stand to be corrected by someone with experience with later fans. Edited July 25 by Paul Carmody
Mark Olson
That is a shaded pole motor and it is not unusual for a small shaded pole to run 160F, which is hot enough that most people can not hold their hand on it. 1

If shaded pole motors run that hot, are they more likely to have windings that degrade due to the high heat?
John Landstrom
Always good info here, and I can use this on a new build Mark’s helping me out on. oh, I was going to make a silly joke about “shaded poles”, the “size of the motor”, and “how hot they can run” but my sensible wife talked me out of it…… Edited July 26 by John Landstrom
George Durbin
I always thought when the fan starts to smoke a little it is now fully warmed up and ready to roll! 😅🤣🤣 Geo...

Jimmy Vineyard
Boy, this helps a lot. Estate fans I'm working on or would not worry about it. Will not run much anyway, just a simple cleanup and put on display. Temps did concern me as it's hard to hold at the 135 range. Great advice for a newbie trying to play catch-up. I did change out the bearings and it helped a little with temps. Bought a donor to use just in case, and it paid off. Appreciate all the feedback.
