Russ Huber Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 In the event you're at a silly ole flea market and spotted an Emerson 24666 priced firm at $350, which variant(s) would persuade you to dig your wallet out?? Now keep in mind, all 4 variants should come factory equipped with the not so common ratchet case oscillator wheel (ball detent). If not, it was replaced with the improved patented adjustment case. Emerson 24666 variant number #1. Cast iron 3 rivet hub, brass struts, brass guard with stamped brass badge, narrow platform base. 2 Quote
Russ Huber Posted August 17, 2024 Author Posted August 17, 2024 Emerson 24666 variant #2. Cast iron 3 rivet hub, brass struts, brass guard with etched brass badge, narrow/large platform base. 1 Quote
Russ Huber Posted August 17, 2024 Author Posted August 17, 2024 Emerson 24666 variant #3. Cast iron 3 rivet hub, steel struts, steel guard with etched brass badge, narrow/large platform base. Quote
Russ Huber Posted August 17, 2024 Author Posted August 17, 2024 Emerson 24666 variant #4. Stamped steel hub, steel struts, steel guard with etched brass badge, large platform base. Quote
Russ Huber Posted August 17, 2024 Author Posted August 17, 2024 Same thing applies to the Emerson 24646 4 wing model. 🙂 2 Quote
Russ Huber Posted August 17, 2024 Author Posted August 17, 2024 (edited) 1917-18 was a very busy transitional time for Emerson 12"& 16" desk & bracket fans. Early 1917 was using up old stock and gradually transitioning into the new models and materials used. 🙂 I am confident WW1 played a major role in the transition. Steve Butler Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 To answer your $350 question, brass brings the bucks at my house. Unfortunately I have the fourth version but I would definitely buy either of the first two and sell the one I have. 😉 Mine does have the ratchet box. Quote

It has its place in the 24xxx variant timeline, and despite the lack of brass trimmings they are very hardy well-constructed residence fan motors. I should have left out the $$$ figure. That intact ratchet case is a little goldmine in itself. 🙂 I made this post not to be condescending, but to be helpful to members who may question the value of these fans based on how WE as an organization tend to place a price tag on specific fans. The fan images I used on the 24666 models on this post were taken from images found on the web in a constructive manner. If I used an image of your fan without crediting, sorry if it offended you. I don't have images of all the fans on the planet to pull from file. 🙂 The transitional 24xxx models could be collected specifically with pride just within themselves. Good luck finding all the ratchet cases (ball detent) intact and present. That would be your biggest challenge. The ratchet case (ball detent) was used up until the early 1919 27xxx models with embossed speed numbers were placed on the market. Quote
Stan Adams Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 Not sure if the 12” did this, but the 16” added one more thing to the variant base. Square blade base or rounded blade base. Emerson’s motto seemed to be use any spare parts on the shelf Quote

Stan, at your convenience, could you post a picture, or better explain what you mean by square or rounded blade bases? Maybe I am just being dense on this one? 🙂 Quote

Tristan Crider Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 Haha that first one used to be mine! Nice fan and like all the other fans I've sold I wish I would have kept it. Quote

Stan Adams Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 At one time, thanks to Doc’s input, we were pretty convinced the rounded bottom on a cast hub was only used with a steel cage. Then I bought a 24668 with brass cage, cast hub, & round bottom blades. Oops, a wise guy snuck in. 1 Quote
Russ Huber Posted August 18, 2024 Author Posted August 18, 2024 Now members should be able to spot an Emerson 24xxx type #1, #2, #3 variant without even looking at the tag. 🙂 Quote

Geoff Dunaway Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 19646 & 19666 follow fairly close to the same style changes then morphing into 26646, 27646, 27666 Quote
George Durbin Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 I am not trying to stir a pot of excrement here but... Repair shops used what they had on hand to repair these fans too! Could a number of these variants simply be repaired fans with parts on hand? Quote

And a BUNCH of RATCHET CASE (ball detent) adjustment cases got wasted and replaced with the later bullet proof adjustment case. Other than that, you're stirring the excrement pot. 1 Quote
George Durbin Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 Another question I have.. what will the ball detent wheels on emmy 450's fit on other than the 450's? Quote
