Russ Huber Posted August 30, 2024 Author Posted August 30, 2024 The Electrical Record starting in 1914 fan manufacturer specifications does not support Shedd Electric making fans until 1917. And to add to the mystery, Shedd Electric fan manufacture gives the impression around 12 their fan manufacture falls off the map. Quote
Russ Huber Posted August 30, 2024 Author Posted August 30, 2024 (edited) 1917 Electrical trade shares no images of Shedd fans I am aware of. Edited August 30, 2024 by Russ Huber Quote
Russ Huber Posted August 30, 2024 Author Posted August 30, 2024 Shedd is still offering the "Comfort" vane deflector table in 1913. Nothing listed in fan motors. Quote
Russ Huber Posted August 30, 2024 Author Posted August 30, 2024 Shedd is still offering the "Comfort" vane deflector table in 1912. Nothing listed in fan motors. Quote
Russ Huber Posted August 30, 2024 Author Posted August 30, 2024 The last Shedd is mentioned manufacturing fans before 1917 was 11. Quote
Russ Huber Posted August 30, 2024 Author Posted August 30, 2024 (edited) 1909 introduction Shedd Vane oscillator. How big was Shedd's factory? Edited August 31, 2024 by Russ Huber 2 Quote
Russ Huber Posted August 30, 2024 Author Posted August 30, 2024 (edited) The only clue I am aware of on this Shedd to give it some type of timeline is the gear mesh used on Diehl/Jandus/ABjandus/Dayton. Did Dayton's use of the Shedd vane have a come around from Dayton/AB/Jandus for the mechanical oscillator mechanism on the Shedd 10-11? Edited August 30, 2024 by Russ Huber 1 Quote

Steve Rockwell Posted August 30, 2024 Posted August 30, 2024 Yet another incorporation--- Circa 1912 they were making a concerted effort at vacuum cleaners as well... 1 Quote
Steve Rockwell Posted August 30, 2024 Posted August 30, 2024 Grist for the mill... I give less credence to this likely anticipatory 1918 listing: Quote

Russ Huber Posted August 30, 2024 Author Posted August 30, 2024 (edited) Shedd was attaching Thomas Romer Weyant's patented vane on to fan motors on the open market in 01. 1902 was the first year Weyant's patented fan motor with vane was introduced to the Shedd (wallet & electrician) fan motor line. then known as the "Comfort Oscillator" Edited August 30, 2024 by Russ Huber Quote

Russ Huber Posted August 31, 2024 Author Posted August 31, 2024 (edited) This model was manufactured it appears between 1906 and 08 based on information found in 1905 and 1909 electrical trade. The 09 Shedd electrical trade article information states the reversing EXTENSION arms were on the previous model to the NEW 09 design. The vane construction itself seen below "may" have been a new feature for 09. If so, there is a possibility the vane is not original to the fan. Russ Huber Posted August 31, 2024 Author Posted August 31, 2024 Shedd shut down their New York sales office in 07. Unless Shedd continued to use motor tags with the New York office address beyond the time it was shut down, the reversing extension arms for the vane were a new feature in 06-07. Quote
Steve Rockwell Posted August 31, 2024 Posted August 31, 2024 (edited) " Images credited to Steve Rockwell and his MiSci's Schenectady archive images" 1902 was the first year Weyant's patented fan motor with vane was introduced to the Shedd (wallet & electrician) fan motor line. Weyant, like so many others, went international early in production... 5 Jun 1903 Adelaide Advertiser You've got to like this advertisement... This looks as if Shedd is possibly now independent of Roselle? (Elizabeth is to the east of Roselle Park, Aldene is a district within Roselle) Or merely an improvement on Russ' 1907 announcement above concerning offices located in NJ...? Factory Location Ouch... Whatever the case, Shedd filed bankruptcy 1914, had become heavily involved in motor vehicle work... This may be a parallel situation to that of George Towle, whose name lived on (for a time) attached to his fan company subsequent to his personal departure... Russ Huber Posted August 31, 2024 Author Posted August 31, 2024 I recall from the distant past AFCA members before Google books began to expand, it was thought Shedd was manufacturing in NY. No, the Shedd sales office was located in NY. Another misconception was Shedd's early contributions to the vane itself. Steve Rockwell pointed out through directories Shedd was an electrician prior to meeting up with the vane designer Thomas Romer Weyant turn of 20th century. Those early Shedd vanes appear to be exclusively Weyant's engineering. Quote

Russ Huber Posted September 1, 2024 Author Posted September 1, 2024 I found electrical trade evidence of Shedd fan motors on the market in 14-15. Quote
Russ Huber Posted September 1, 2024 Author Posted September 1, 2024 (edited) The Shedd Electric concern appears to be a lot more complicated than we perceived. Weyant was having trouble getting his patented vane mechanism financed and manufactured which originally was attached to fan motors on the open market. Harry Shedd appears to have been in charge of giving Weyant that opportunity. Just how much Harry Shedd himself had anything to do with the engineering of any of the Shedd vanes and fan motors that sported his name....?? Edited September 1, 2024 by Russ Huber Quote
