Westinghouse 164864B 4 Blade Question ?

Greetings,

Just purchased a Westinghouse 161864B for a winter project. Having a hard time dating it as all the pictures I pull up show a six blade

and a date around  1915ish. Clearly this is a four blade and the blade guard looks like the 1920s style . Any thoughts on date. The cloth

power cord is fairly flexible.  Safe to say it has been replaced before.  The rubber cord from the switch to the stator is rubber. Would

I be correct in saying that is not original as well.   I have not plugged it in yet and don't plan on it until I disassemble, clean and replace 

the cords. Mostly a radio guy and never turn up an old radio until recap etc.

Your fan was born a 6 blade brass blade fan with a brass cage.

interesting, maybe the original was damaged. Four blades will be less load on the motor but less air. I am still looking forward to

repairing. Will need to keep and eye out got for blades and guard. How hard can that be 🙂 

 

I should open it and look at the windings. maybe someone swapped the id tag not the blades and  guard

one easy way to tell if the stator is the 6 pole version, look in the vent holes at the rotor, the dimpled ends will almost be touchng on a 6 pole stator, the 4 pole has spacing between them, I do not recall the count, pic shows 4 vs 6 pole stamped steel fans' version

Any chance of burning up the motor on these Westy fans with not running as much load on them, allowing it to with faster?

Patrick , less load is not going to burn the motor up, the 4 pole is roughly 1725 rpm, the 6 pole 1140 , it will not exceed that. The issue is putting the heavy 6 blade on the 4 pole motor, that & friction might cause it to run hotter/more watts. I didn’t test that on these westy units.

Joel,  if this is a 12” fan, it should be as I have one restored with your model number, I have an extra 6 wing 12” brass blade in excellent condition. One wing has a small dimple, but other than that it’s the correct blade, stamped “17”, for 1917 production.. it is lacquered too.   Send me a PM if your interested,  Malcolm MacGregor

It IS/WAS a 12" 6 wing 6 pole oscillating fan. Joel, what is the micro date on the bottom left-hand corner of your motor tag?

Joel's fan has pot metal bearing caps so it must date 1914+.

the code is 10-16-14. Guessing that means 1914 ?

Lawrence thanks again for the pics. Yes it is a 6 pole rotor. Mystery solved. At some point the blade and guard were changed out. Don't

have a ton of money in it and I still like it.  May park it for a few weeks until I finish a couple of radio repairs and and a Hunter Century fan

for the Mrs. She sales them at the local antique store.
