Picked up this 19644 a couple weeks ago. Japan is fairly intact so not repainting. Just some rust mitigation. Looks like someone clear coated it years ago. I put the pieces in some citrus degreaser and this film just peeled off. Maybe it was a peel paint. Anyway, that bad choice may have helped keep more of it intact. The blade is coated with it too, after a mediocre polishing job was done to it. Electrical and all major parts intact. Coils need carefully cleaned and I will revarnish what is visible.

The cage will be the bulk of the work. 4 S wires broken and someone used electrical solder to rejoin pieces. Very sloppy and proving difficult to remove without damaging the rings. So I will need to make new wires which is one of my least favorite things. 20230630_153738.thumb.jpg.1b7a042e5004905f05b93c91bda8cd9e.jpg20230630_155410.thumb.jpg.097dc5fdc9be967bb0377bd40c2841be.jpg20230630_153716.thumb.jpg.468e12f2d42779d6ebe2ff41737116a6.jpg

The japan polishes up nicely (left).

That's a terrific fan and well worth the time and effort to restore it. I think your assessment of the japanne is correct (from the pictures anyway).  How did you acquire it (and what did you pay)?

Here is another shot of it. The main housing is soaking right now to remove that film but its japan is even more intact. I paid $150 for it at an antique mall before it even hit the shelves as the owner was putting a price tag on it.

Way to sneak up on a good fan Trevor.  Since we’re both DesMoineans I have a couple of stories that are the opposite of yours.   Maybe 25 years ago there was strange little sale in a West Des Moines strip mall.  Told Barb, “I’m just going to run through this, last day …. there won’t be anything”.   Half price day and there sat a dirty but perfect 19644 for $15.

Next was at Hawkeye Acres at their crappy monthly summer flea market.  We drove by and Barb said, “you gonna go”? ….. “Nope, last day, there won’t be anything”.  “You’re just going to fall asleep in your chair”.   So I took the family home and went back.  There sat a 14646 and a 29648.  “How much for the fan”? “$75” so I said “which one” …. “Both of them”.

BTW Trevor ….. did you see the kidney oscillator at Racoon antiques.  No kidney and you’d have to straighten the cage.  Tag says it runs and the paints good. $90 assuming 10%.  Also a bell oscillator ($90)  and a 9” century.

Thanks for the info on those John. Ive never been in that place but have been meaning to. Might have to get the kidney as Ive not had one yet. There was an early Emerson Jr and a Northwind at Picker Knows 2 weeks ago but they were asking I think $150 for those. I of course grabbed this one but overpriced for the others imo. Yes I like finding the steals. I think this fan, my 1905 pancake for $1 and the 29645 I got for $30 are the best finds Ive had.

Ps. You need to share your fan finding spots with me sometime if you ever retire from the obsession lol.

I picked up the kidney. Almost got the brass bell but I have enough GE stuff to work on. Probably take me longer to find the gears than the kidney. Aspirations I guess lol

I tasted it just to be sure. Jk. Got the wires bent. Later I'll do the hardest part for me, getting loop bent around the front ring tight enough without any gouges to the brass. I anneal the areas to bend but still have problems. 20230715_165914.thumb.jpg.d6f1819788f7396965d06f3d206851f9.jpg

Looking good Trevor! I'm still in my infancy of trying my hand at cage building. Definitely need patience with it!

Got it done. Not perfect but acceptable. 20230715_192706.thumb.jpg.4bd42f389a4fbd2c036bac04af9480c6.jpg

Well bad news is the supposed japan on the main housing was an old repainting job and disintegrated with cleaning. So I will be repainting it after all.

I have a real japan paint that I oven stove. It is made from gilsonite and pine rosin dissolved in turpentine and linseed oil. It turns hard, black and shiny and does not melt with any solvent that I am aware of. The only ingredient that I left out of the recipe was litharge, a lead compound, drying agent. If you would like, I can put this finish on all or any parts of your Emerson

Does anyone have ohm readings for the stator on a 19644 or compatible fan? I am showing this with mine.

Green-White 39.6

Black-Green 183.5

Black-White 224.5

Any idea which wire goes where? I cant find a diagram.

Green, common, should go to the choke flying lead, the one that comes out of the center of the choke

White, run,  should go to line

Black, start, should go to high (I think I see a stub of wire sticking off the far right switch terminal)

The other line cord end should go to the switch lever.

If the motor does not start right away, try green on line and black on the flying lead

The motor runs backwards with this setup. I will try swapping it tomorrow.

Swap common & run, start stays on the high speed connection

I just took a pair of my smooth wire bending pliers and pushed down the tunnels made by the old S wires. I put a tiny dab of jb weld on the brass ends before inserting them again and it holds secure.

I broke down and got the brass bell. There's a little whirlwind in there but I can't bring myself to spend $120 on one. 20230823_123534.thumb.jpg.1c0c432c6ea5a1e53a66d45d77bc29f1.jpg
