Hello fan friends:  While coming home today from some golf, I passed an antique store so I figured I would stop and look around. It was so hot out (over 90 degrees) that there weren't too many cars in the parking lot. I didn't find any fans (the owner said he sold two yesterday) but I did spot this little guy. He was very inexpensive so I took him home.

As soon as I got home, I wired it up (wires exited the case underneath) and it fired right up and ran perfectly.

I disassembled it quickly and noticed something right away. The rotation can be reversed by moving the brushes which rotate around a unique mechanism which you can see below.

I've never seen the like of this. It came apart easily.

First thing to do was clean the motor tag which has a lovely blue field around the brass home motor lettering.

I may tape off the center with the blue and paint the rest of the tag so that the black background is more even.

All the parts are cleaned up except for some screws and the brush insulators which I will tackle next.

I'm pretty sure that the case is potmetal so I have been careful not to drop it.

I'd be most grateful if someone (Russ Huber?) could provide some background on this. It was fitted with a pulley attachment at the end of the rotor so I'm guessing it was used to run some other appliance with a belt?

Anyway, thanks for reading. I'd welcome suggestions on what color to paint it. It's hard to tell what the original color was.

One possibility for its previous life is to drive a watchmakers lathe.

These are fun to find David, a few complete 'kits' have sold lately, foot pedal, fan blade (they did have a fan option). I believe these were often nickel-plated from new. I'm sure there have been a few posts about them if you search. I think the majority sold went originally to power sewing machines.

My daughter Lauren (being smart like her mother) found these pictures in a minute.

And she found this on Chad Baker's website:

I guess I'd like to find a cage and blade for this beauty to make it complete.

From what I know, which is little, there's two versions. The one pictured above is the type I own, there's another later version with simple round struts. I sold that version to Jeff in Michigan. The cage is found more often than the blade and cage although I managed to find the "kit" on e and once only. They show up, patience....

I'll watch for them. Thanks Miichael.

I am sorry, David, I did not mean to hijack your thread. I took a drive yesterday and came across one of these little motors in a shop. It is the only item I brought back with me. I have seen a number of them, but never brought one home. I thought of this thread when I saw it. I took it partially apart, cleaned, powered it, and it took off. I was amazed to see the brushes were like new. I am not 100% on this, but I am fairly confident the castings are a rough surface aluminum. The castings are not magnetic. I took the mid-section to the buffing wheel and brought out a luster. Cool little machine. 🙂
