Help with Graybar (8504?) 12" brass pedestal fan

HI all, 

I've been poking around here and on you tube looking for some help with this gray bar fan. I am very new to this and my electrical experience doesn't go beyond rewiring stage lights. Here's what I've gleaned, forgive me if my terminology is wrong...as you'll see in the pics it's got a 3 wire head wire hanging in the breeze. I messed here with a meter and I only got a reading on 2 of those cables. I haven't opened the back up. I did open the base. The switch is broken. The coil appears intact. Is that a capacitor?...it gave me a little buzz from the past (which was my bad but it also amazes me that there's juice in there).  Makes me think this is above my head but I'd like to try. I think I have the fan bug... Advice? Wiring diagram?
