Were these tight when they were new?    Everyone I have encountered is loose to some varying degree.

I've often seen that this is the case and have had good luck using JB Weld around the underside which seems to lock the shaft into place.

Ok,  thanks.  But were they loose by design or become loose over time?

Pot metal joined to steel. Not the best mechanical connection given the weight of the motor. 
Daves fix is likely the best.

JB Weld.The duct tape of fanmanship. I've had success with what David suggested.
