Quentin Malzahn
Hello guys and happy New Year’s it’s been awhile since Ive posted on here but I’ve found something amazing at an antique mall in Traverse City Mi. This is a 12 inch Westy universal motor fan possibly from the late teens. This is probably the oldest fan I’ve ever bought at an antique mall and quite possibly the oldest in my collection. I’ve never ever seen a 12 inch Westinghouse with a universal motor in it. I thought it was a centrifugal switch start fan until I heard what it sounds like and the sparking from the brushes rubbing against the commutator that I realized this was not an induction motor fan. Its hard to see the model number on the motor tag because its faded. This fan is in pretty good shape for its age surprisingly. It was originally for $350 but I talked the seller down to $250 so I got a really good deal on it. If anyone has any information on this model of Westinghouse fan please let me know thanks. Sorry the lighting is not the greatest in the photos Edited December 31, 2023 by Quentin Malzahn

Russ Huber
"If"...... I am seeing a micro date of 11 on your tag, I would be suspicious of the authenticity of that fan. Westinghouse used laminated stators on their stamp steel brushed DC models. I never tried running AC through one.

Jim Kovar
The motor plate sez it's an AC motor... Brushes... tell me it's a series motor... Being marked for AC operation only,... and assuming being multi-speed,... is the speed coil resistive or inductive? Either would work for AC operation. Russ Huber
Your fan can't have a copper speed coil with a brushed motor, it must be resistance wire. Unfortunately, Bill Voigts compiled data shows the 162620 style, but no description after it. I tried doing a web scan to locate another 162620 model and failed. Very strange no centrifugal switch back that early. I can't validate it, yet I have never heard of such a style as yours. Quentin Malzahn
Surprisingly it seems to work just fine though on that coil. thanks for the info Russ. Mostly I keep my fans for display anyway so I don’t use them as daily runners. Im wondering if someone tampered with it years ago it sure seems real Edited January 1 by Quentin Malzahn
Michael Rathberger
I have a cast iron R&M gear back oscillator. Brush motor 60 cycle fan. The guy I bought it from said his mother used it for years. I think it's model 1176 going from memory. People here swear never made, yet there it is, as found, untouched original. Found about 70 miles south of you. Proof of "manufactured" on this sight is always questioned, but the fans exist. Enjoy your fan.

Russ Huber
Nobody is calling you out on the fan or trying to rain on your parade. 🙂 It is interesting. Please, at your convenience, take some good profile shots of it to share. And if you're up to it at your convenience, please drop the switch plate so we can see your coil. Maybe someone will come forward with that style number.
Steve Stephens
When I see brush holders on many fans I think it is for 25 or 40 cycles. Could the motor tag have been restamped? Is the rear of one blade hub finger stamped with a year or years as on mine (11 and 12 in one photo below)? I have Style 162634, 60 cycle, 6 wing, 12", TWO speeds. Other than the zip power cord the fan is all original. Quentin, can you tell if the bearing carriers are made of pot metal or brass/bronze which mine has. These are the very first of the stamped steel Westy fans before they went to pot metal on the bearing holders.

Russ Huber
3 minutes ago, Michael Rathberger said: Bill's survey clearly states the 25 cycle as suffix "a" You see, that's what make this early tagged 60 cycle brush motor with a 162620 style interesting. Anyone out there with a style 162620 out there? Why would Westinghouse make a gazillion early centrifugal start AC models and a couple of brush motor AC 60 cycle models? Steve Stephens
The Style Number suffix I don't think has any more to do with the fan than a later suffix is a later year or modification. Bill probably knew. I helped him out one time when we took all of his Westy stamped steel fans from his storage unit and made or added notes to his survey. Russ Huber
I think we're a little closer to the real deal story. It appears your fan may have started out as a 25 cycle fan and was converted in the past over to 60 cycles.
Steve Stephens
1 hour ago, Michael Rathberger said: Bill's survey cleary states the 25 cycle as suffix "a" Bill's survey was a SURVEY of the Westys he had where he entered the tag info for the SS Westys he had. Suffix A fans were made around a similar time where the suffix letter seems to be more related to the chronological age of the fan in question and not much more.
